Microneedling has become one of the most requested and effective medical aesthetics treatments used for skin rejuvenation. When performed safely and effectively, dramatic long term results can be achieved.

Nano needling infusion is the newest “needling” treatment creating a wave of excitement in our industry. Nano is an aesthetic treatment where your clients will see immediate hydrating glow to their skin. Nano also aids in the added penetration of active ingredients, thus enhancing management of skin conditions.

Both treatments have the word “needling” in their description. As such, the difference between each treatment can be confusing.

Similarities Between Nano and Microneedling

Both nano and microneedling treatments use a pen like device that oscillates a tip up and down to stimulate a skin reaction. They both induce cellular turnover and regulation, and provoke the healing process (to varying degrees) that results in skin rejuvenation.

The Microneedling Difference

This procedure uses an actual needle cartridge with 12 or 36 fine needles that can be adjusted to different depths. The EstheticPro pen also has speed variables. These adjustable perimeters allow the practitioner to adjust the depth and speed to treat a variety of skin types, conditions and Fitzpatricks. The micro-injuries caused by the procedure stimulate the body’s natural healing process, increasing collagen and elastin production to promote skin rejuvenation. This procedure can also be effective for pigmentation, stretch marks and even hair loss. Microneedling is not meant to infuse product into the skin. The lips and inside the ocular socket cannot be treated. These treatments are done monthly usually in a series of 3-6 treatments to see optimal results. This treatment is medical in nature and quality training will ensure a safe and effective treatment.

Nano Needling

Nano needling on the other hand works a little different. It does use the same type of oscillating motion to treat the skin but the cartridge encompasses silicone or stainless steel pyramids, instead of needles. The name nano needling is somewhat of a misconception, as actual needles are not used. These microscopic hair-like cones separate the cells within the very top layer of epidermis to allow enhanced penetration of active products. Nano needling only affects the epidermis, treating within the upper .2 mm of the skin. The benefits of this serum infusion treatment includes immediate glow with no downtime and long term management of most skin conditions. Custom eye and lip treatments can be created because nano needling can be done over the lips and up to the lash line on the eyes. Nano needling infusion can be done in conjunction with other treatments, facials or as a stand alone treatment. Nano needling is an aesthetic treatment, is non invasive and safe to treat most all skin types and conditions.

Which Treatment is Best for What Skin Condition?

Micro Needling and Nano Needling have their place in skin rejuvenation for almost every client and they treat many of the same skin conditions.  Either modality will have a positive effect on the skin.

When it comes to deeper acne scars and wrinkles, hair regrowth, stretch marks and hypo-pigmentation the deeper micro- injuries associated with microneedling would be the best choice. More trauma is initiated so the procedure carries more risk. Results can be more dramatic than nano needling, and be achieved in a faster amount of time. Additional insurance is usually required.

When a less invasive treatment is desired, nano needling infusion would be the best choice. Your clients will notice an immediate glow and plumpness to their skin. A series of treatments can enhance rejuvenation. Because nano needling is non invasive, additional insurance is not required.

With the goal to provide the best outcome, both procedures can be used to advance the results for many skin conditions. Both procedures have the ability to transform if used for the right skin condition with an educated technician.
